Government Loans & Grants

StudentAid BC basics

Eligible students can apply for a BC Student Loan through StudentAid BC. Loans offer low interest rates, flexible repayment, and may be paired with grants. Applications are processed first-come, first-served — apply early to secure funding before the term begins.

How StudentAid BC works

StudentAid BC helps eligible students with post-secondary costs through loans, grants, scholarships, and other programs. Eligibility is not automatic: students must meet personal eligibility rules and study at a designated school in an eligible program.

StudentAid BC assesses financial need by comparing allowable education costs with student resources. Education costs can include tuition, fees, books, supplies, living allowance, dependant expenses, and day-care expenses where applicable.

For full-time funding, B.C. and Canada student loans are interest-free while you are in study, repayment begins six months after studies end, and loan funding must be repaid.

What to confirm first

  • Your citizenship or immigration status for StudentAid BC purposes
  • Your B.C. residency status or the correct province/territory to apply through
  • Whether your selected MCC program is currently eligible for StudentAid BC
  • Your course load and study period dates for the application
  • Any supporting documents requested through your StudentAid BC dashboard

Full-time StudentAid BC funding normally requires at least 60% of a full-time course load, or 40% for students with a permanent disability or persistent/prolonged disability.

Application Timeline

How funding usually moves from research to payment

This timeline is a planning guide. StudentAid BC, MCC admissions, and your own documents all need to line up before funds can be released or payments finalized.

1

Choose a program and intake

Pick your intended MCC program and start date. StudentAid BC applications require a study period, and MCC can only confirm program-specific details after you choose a pathway.

2

Request a tuition estimate

Ask admissions for current tuition, required fees, expected materials, and payment deadlines for the selected intake. Keep the estimate with your funding records.

3

Apply for funding early

StudentAid BC advises students to apply online through the StudentAid BC dashboard. The latest full-time application deadline is six weeks before the study program ends, but early planning is strongly recommended.

4

Confirm enrollment and payment

Funding is not released until enrollment is confirmed and the study period has begun. Students remain responsible for deadlines, documents, and any unpaid balance.

Additional options to explore

Not every student will use the same funding source. Your best plan may combine savings, family support, scholarships, government aid, private financing, or employer support.

BC residents

Start with StudentAid BC if you are a B.C. resident and your program is eligible. Your application may assess both loan and grant eligibility.

Students from another province

Apply through the student aid program for your home province or territory unless StudentAid BC rules classify you as a B.C. resident.

International students

Plan for tuition, living costs, travel, and proof-of-funds requirements. Explore family, sponsor, bank, employer, or private scholarship support.

Employer or community support

Some students use employer training support, community awards, service clubs, professional associations, or education lines of credit.

The cleanest way to claim a scholarship or bursary is to apply for it at the same time as you apply for admission. The admissions team will guide you through the documents needed and confirm your eligibility.
